Two weeks down…

Well, our 2 weeks are up…

Most of the posts I have read say the first 2 weeks of the recovery are the worst, with lots of ups and downs.  We sure have had our ups,  but not too many downs!  Ginger continues to do well though the drains are still draining.  Her stitches will come out Thursday, and we’re hoping for a prompt end to the drainage so that we can stop the constant vigilence that we are all so tired of.

This is night one without pain meds, and she seems to be doing fine…so far.

Ginger is loving her outdoor time.  She still rolls around in the bit of snow that is left, and loves to drag Dad all over the yard.  She loves her treats, but will not eat her regular food.  🙁  We bought some food that looks like treats, and that seems to be working for now.  🙂

Married with 2 college age children. We have 2 goldens from the same litter who were born on leap day, 2/29/2004. A male and a female. Ginger was diagnosed with bone cancer and is scheduled to have her left rear leg amputated on Tuesday, 2/23 so I am here trying to learn what to expect.

  1. Yay, Ginger! We’re so happy your recovery has gone well so far! Holly stopped eating her food during her 2nd week of recovery, too. We think it was the combination of the pain meds and antibiotics she was on. So hopefully Ginger’s appetite will come back soon now that she’s off her pain meds!

from Holly: I love rolling in the snow, too! But ours is diminishing… what’s up with rain? Can’t it be snow? Snow is so much fun to roll in. Have you made some snow angels? 🙂

  2. Hooray for Ginger!! So happy to hear that you’ve had more ups than downs during this 2 week recovery. Now that she’s no longer on pain meds, I bet you’ll see an increase in her appetite for sure. I like your idea of making her food look like treats – I’ll have to try that as Mackenzie loves her treats even when she’s not interested in eating. Sounds like Ginger is going strong with her love for the outdoors and rolling in the snow. All great signs for a full recovery! Kami (Mackenzie’s Mom)

  3. HOORAY!!! Glad to hear she is doing soooo well 🙂 would love some video of that little nut rolling in the yard (and owning her dad, hehe). Congratulations on your pawesome recovery, Ginger!

  4. Well done, Ginger! Happy to hear you’ve enjoyed far more ups than downs.

Good thinking getting food that looks like treats!

Catie really didn’t have problems with her appetite during the post-operative recovery period; the pain meds did make her dopey, lethargic and out of sorts. This last chemo treatment was the only event so far where she experienced loss of appetite.

    Keep on cruisin’, Ginger!

  5. Hi Ginger!

Glad to hear that your first two weeks went well! Sounds like you mastered being a tripawd in no time! The greatest thing to hear from new tripawd pawrents is them expressing how quickly their beloved dog adapts to only having three legs! My brother learned quickly and he was amazing! He wanted people to treat him like any other dog and he ran, walked, played ball, there was no stopping him!

Stay strong and get spoiled like crazy Ginger! You deserve it! Enjoy every day, don’t waste time worrying about the future! Focus on the now!!

    XOXO

  6. Hey Ginger, hope that food tastes better for you now. How’s it going? Is the drain out? Ick. Sure hope so.

You sure are doing great, that makes us all very, very hoppy here! Keep it up.
