Good afternoon all. Well, it’s been 19 days now since surgery. Things seem to have settled down. Ginger still has a bit of an infection that shows in what has been draining out of her for 18 days now! She is on her second round of antibiotics. This round more potent. Today has been our first day without drainage and can I say it’s about darn time! Since Ginger has come home she has not been alone at all. Between days off for both Gingers Mom and Dad and our poor son having the disadvantage of having his college break last week, we have been able to have someone home with Ginger 24/7. The main reason for the constant supervision is Gingers total hatred for that darn lampshade she would have had to wear. Put that darn thing on Ginger and she gets the deer in the headlight look and will not move. If I could get her to balance on her one rear leg and then put that lampshade on her, she would stay balanced on that leg indefinitely! She just totally freezes up so the lampshade was not an option. And Ginger is a little lady and likes to keep clean so she would definitely lick if we left her alone. It has been 18 days of sleeping on the air mattress on the floor and spending all our time with her. The things we do for our pets! But she is worth it. It is for certain she is handling this better then we humans are! 🙂
Ginger still amazes me. If I went thru 10% of what she did, I’d be still in bed, whining about my bad luck. Ginger is walking around, living each day to it’s fullest. We sure can learn from our pets. I am going to steal Lincoln’s line (Lincoln the Golden tripawd) and say that we are gonna make this a Ginger summer. She deserves it.
We are still waiting for the results of her leg biopsy and next Tuesday she gets her remaining stitches out, so we still have a long way to go. Like it is said here, we are living one day at a time.
Have a great day all.
What a great update! Yeay Ginger!
That’s a bummer about the 2nd round of antibiotics but we hope it works. Be sure to add some plain yogurt to her diet, and some probiotic supplements to keep the good bacteria in her gut alive (antibiotics will rob you of that and ironically enough increase your susceptibility to other illnesses).
Yep, one hop at a time. That’s the way to live life indeed!
Hope this round of antibiotics knocks out whatever’s not supposed to be there. For good.
Dogs are so much more resilient that we humans, that’s for sure. I’d still be in bed with a lot of dramatic moping and crying and whining too, and there’s no way you’d get a lamp shade close enough for me to wear.
Keep hopping, Ginger!
Yay, Ginger! Keep up the pawsome recovery! We hope this round of antibiotics does the trick for you. We peeps sure can learn alot from you dogs… Holly’s been teaching us lots about taking it one day at a time. 🙂
Hugs,
Holly and Holly’s mom

What a wonderful family you have Ginger!
I am always so humbled by the lessons that Tripawds continue to teach us.
We hope all the bad stuff is behind you and the news you hear on Tuesday is good.

What a lucky Ginger to have her mom, dad and brother home during her recovery! When they told me that I might have to use that lampshade, I said no way and I know Mackenzie would have said the same thing. I have a soft cone that is much more flexible but during Mackenzie’s recovery time, never had to use it. I thank our lucky paws….imagine going through all of that and then having to put that darn hard cone from the hospital on your head on top of it. 18 days on the air mattress! That’s total devotion! (We spent about 10 days on the air mattress and I was so relieved when I could finally return to my own bed. )
You are so right…the things we do for love and for our pets! And the things we learn in the process. So worth it. Best of luck with the biopsy results on Tues and getting Ginger’s stitches out. We’ll be thinking of you and keeping our paws crossed that everything is good. Kami (Mackenzie’s Mom)
Keep enjoying one day at a time! Get spoiled rotten (sounds like you are already great at that)!
Hope the infection goes away soon! Yucky drainage 🙁 !
XOXO

Ginger, I’m on your side regarding the cone! Let’s put it on mommy and daddy and see if they want to do a jig! Plus, we all know they’ll make a Kodak moment out of it if we act like it’s fun! Or dog forbid, they post it on youtube with a title of “Dancing Conehead Dog”!
Stand firm, my friend!

I have a comfy cone for Ruthie but she never needed it. She healed really well and it seems quite quickly. She had staples, not stitches. Her main problem were the meds they gave her for infection that made her throw everything up all the time. Good luck with the biopsy results…I hate getting that stuff, my stomach gets all turned in knots! Our dog friends are all so incredible. I was afraid Ruthie would hate me for putting her through all this, but I think she was actually relieved to get the leg off. They are the best! Ginger’s a lucky dog to have such good parents. Ruthie sends tail wags.
