Our Roller Coaster Ride…

It has been quite a roller coaster ride since Ginger was diagnosed with cancer in January, but now our car has returned to the station, thus ending Ginger’s Story.

She was so good.  She was recuperating from the TPLO, and her chest x-rays were clear!  So when she started to whine on and off, for no apparent reason and had difficulty finding a comfortable position, we knew it was time to go back to the vet.  We were hoping for a tummy ache, we got a very large mass at the site of the amputation.  The doctor said ‘melon sized’.  We took her to the hospital last Friday, 9/10/10, so that we could get an ultrasound.  According to the ultrasound, it looked large, but contained – not invading the surrounding organs.  They thought they could take it out, but would not really know until they opened her up.  We went for it.  The doctor called in short order to tell us that it was indeed invasive, and huge…and the surgery now, was far more risky.  We told her to continue because, slim as it was, it was our only hope.  A couple hours later, the surgeon called again…Ginger didn’t make it through the operation.

Heaven has another new, sweet angel.  We miss her terribly.

Married with 2 college age children. We have 2 goldens from the same litter who were born on leap day, 2/29/2004. A male and a female. Ginger was diagnosed with bone cancer and is scheduled to have her left rear leg amputated on Tuesday, 2/23 so I am here trying to learn what to expect.

  1. Oh I am so sorry to read this. My heart aches for you. Please know we are all here for you, and always will be. Heaven’s newest angel will be missed. I am sending you lots of hugs, and as much comfort as I can…
    Hugs,

  2. Oh beautiful Ginger, rest in peace and run free with all the tripawd heroes at the bridge. You were very fortunate to have such giving people who did all they could for you, out of love and respect for all that you gave them, and this community.

  3. Chloe and I are so sorry to hear about Ginger… Our other dog Bonnie passed away many years ago from lymphoma and her passing was unexpected. She had 6 rounds of chemo, was deemed in remission and a couple months later, we found it had spread to her lungs. At the time she refused to eat and she mostly didn’t move around. Unfortunately we knew it was time because we didn’t want her to starve herself.

Chloe is cancer dog #2, but luckily it was a soft tissue tumor confined to her leg, so amputation “cured” her of the cancer. We will be walking in a K9 Cancer walk in October to celebrate her recovery and in memory of Bonnie. We are also walking for many others on this site who have tripawds and other dogs alike affected with cancer. We would be honored to add Ginger’s name to the back of my shirt in order to walk in her memory too.

Here is a link to my forum, page 7 has an updated picture of the names on the back of the shirt. Every 10 names I post a new picture. The dogs with a + next to their name means they have crossed rainbow bridge like Bonnie. Please leave a comment on my forum if you would like me to add Ginger’s name. Like I said, we would be honored to walk for her too.
